It’s not long ago that I was looking for help for how to make a dog stop barking.
Here are few ideas for you:
1. Discontinue reinforcement.
Attention-seeking barking, also called request barking, is a common problem for dog owners. The first step is to stop giving your dog what she wants whenever she barks, for example, Attention.
2. Ignore the barking.
Even after you’ve discontinued reinforcing the attention-seeking barking behavior, it will take a while to break your dog of the habit. In the meantime, you must ignore this behavior. Do not punish.
3. Reward good behavior.
When your dog finally does stop barking, it’s important that you provide praise and reward. In time, your dog will learn that being silent and obedient will achieve greater rewards than barking.
4. Find a replacement behavior.
One of the best ways to change your dog’s undesirable behavior is to teach her an alternative behavior.
5. Recognize alarm barking.
Alarm barking is any pattern of barking at perceived intruders. Sometimes barking at a real intruder is useful, but barking at perceived intruders like posties, parcel deliverers, or other visitors is annoying and troublesome.
6. Teach your dog the quiet command.
The best way to quell alarm barking is by teaching your dog to be quiet on command. Then you teach your dog to “speak” or bark on command.
This is a problem you really need to solve, and fast.
